Specialty Speckle Coating in Baldwin City, KS
This is the Baldwin City School District's Performing Arts Center. There had been some damage to the drywall in this side entrance where the students and staff come in. The issue became trying to match the existing finish, which is a specialty coating called Crafton, by Bollen International, which we were able to obtain through our Sherwin Williams sales representative. It is an emulsion with tiny capsules of color suspended in the paint. Consequently, it cannot be applied by the standard brush and roll method. It can only be applied with an HVLP (high volume low pressure) sprayer. We did the drywall repair, and then primed the area with Sherwin Williams ProMar 400 flat interior latex in a solid color that was close to the overall color of the speckle finish. Then we applied the speckle finish, spraying in sections first vertically, then horizontally, then a few small touch ups to make sure that the color and coverage was consistent. It's a slow process; this area is roughly 130 square feet, but it took almost 2 hours to put the speckle finish on! Then, to match the existing finish around it, we applied 2 coats Minwax Oil-Modified Waterbased Polyurethane. The end result looks almost like a polished stone.
