Hi there, this is Mike with Absolute Painting here to talk to you a little bit about paint colors. Now, before you choose your color in hue, there are three things that you need to keep in mind when you’re thinking about repainting a room in your home. The first thing is to know your lighting. Do you have a lot of natural light in the room? Is it mostly fluorescent lighting? Now, the thing that you want to know is that the type of lighting will affect the color that you choose. Natural light will tend to soften the colors and bring out the milder tones. Fluorescent lighting is a little bit harsher, so you want to pay attention to how the colors will look with a light that you choose.
Know Your Space
The second thing is, you need to know your space. Is it a small space? Is it a large space? Are the ceilings short? Are the ceilings tall? A larger space can more easily accommodate darker and richer colors and yet not feel small and enclosed. If you take a small room and you paint it a very dark color, the room is actually just going to feel a lot smaller. Something to keep in mind. The third thing you want to think about is what sheen you choose for your paint. There are only two types of sheen that I recommend a customer using when they’re painting the job themselves. The first one is a flat finish or a mat finish. This will make your walls look flat, it’ll hide imperfections a little bit better, and it’ll actually absorb light so that when you look down the wall you won’t see a lot of sheen variation.
Other Recommended Sheen
The other sheen that I recommend is either an eggshell or a satin. It’s a little bit more difficult to paint it and make it look even, but it will give you a little bit more wash ability and protection. Now, there’s another option, which is semi-gloss, but I don’t recommend this unless you’re a professional or you’re putting it in a bathroom where there’s going to be a lot of moisture. If you pay attention to these three things, if you pay attention to your lighting, pay attention to your space, and pay attention to your sheen, this will go a long way into picking nice colors for your home.
