Deck Staining: Types of Stain

Absolute Painting has been the preferred service provider for a variety of essential interior and exterior painting related services.

Hi, this is Mike with Absolute Painting. I want to talk to you today about the different types of deck stain that you can use when staining the exterior of your deck.

Transparent Stain

Number one, the first option is a transparent stain. What this means is that you can apply the stain to the wood and you’ll still see through it and see the wood grain underneath. First, you have to assess what kind of stain you have on your deck right now. Can you see the wood grain? Does it look like the stain is actually almost a part of the wood? This means that the previous stain was a transparent stain that soaked into the wood. You can go over the top of it with a similar color of transparent stain, and it’ll look great and you’ll have that nice wood grain showing through.

Semitransparent Stain

The second option is a semitransparent stain. You can use this over another transparent or semitransparent stain. It will allow some of the wood grain to show through, but give you a little bit more color on the wood. This is the second option.

Solid Color Stain

The third option is to use a solid color stain. This will look a lot like a paint, and it will apply a lot like a paint. It will completely cover the wood and no wood grain will show through. If you’ve had to make repairs to your deck, if you’ve had to replace boards or railings or balusters, and you have several different species of wood on your deck, a solid color stain is going to work really well for you because it will make the deck look clean and uniform and crisp. The other advantage to a solid color is that the paint store will offer it in a wide variety of colors, allowing you to choose a color that you really like.

Now, if you want to have your deck stained and you’re not sure what to use, or you don’t have the time or the inclination to do it, give Absolute Painting a call. We’ll come out. We’ll give you an on the spot quote, down to the penny how much it will cost. This is Mike with Absolute Painting. Until next time, have a great day.
