Hi. This is Mike with Absolute Painting. Are you wanting to get your home painted? Have you heard about the term Lead Certified? Well, I want to talk to you a little bit about what it means to be Lead Certified and how it’s going to affect you when you want to have your home painted. A few years ago, the EPA put out some regulations that every contractor that wants to work on a home that is considered target housing has to be Lead Certified. This means that they know how to minimize the risk of lead exposure to adults and children in the home. The first thing you want to know is, what is target housing? Target housing is defined as any home where people live or where children occupy or reside … such as a school, a house, apartment … that was built on or before 1978.
This means that if you have a home,
or your kid goes to a school that was built before 1978, the government is going to require that a Lead Certified company does the painting or renovation of that property. What do you have to do? Well, what you have to do if you’re going to have any type of work like this done, you want to make sure that the company you hire is Lead Certified. They’ll have a certificate from either the EPA or from a state agency showing that they’ve completed the required training to become Lead Certified. Another thing you’re going to need to do is you’re going to need to receive a pamphlet from the EPA about lead-safe work practices. You’ll have to sign a form that shows you’ve received that pamphlet, and the contractor is required to make sure that they follow all the rules and regulations that are put forth by either the EPA or by the state governed agency.
