We recently painted the walls and railings in one of the stairwells at Tallgrass Creek on Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. They are a premier retirement community in the KC metro.
The metal stair parts were a sort of pink-burgundy color, and the Custom Interiors Coordinator wanted to have it painted a classy, timeless black. We put up yellow caution tape at the top and bottom of the stairs for the safety of the residents and staff. We then used tape and drop cloths to protect the carpets, and sanded all of the metal to ensure the new paint would adhere properly. We hand-applied 2 coats of Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel in Tricorn Black. After letting the paint dry overnight, we painted the walls in the stairs and adjacent landings in a neutral beige, omitting one wall that will be getting a new custom wallpaper.
Projects like this are especially fun for us, because nearly everyone that came by was grateful to see the old color going away!
